Hudswell Clarke D697

Hudswell Clarke 0-4-0DM. Originally purchased by the Trust, Now owned privately.

Supplied new to the Iranian oil company for use in Iran (hence the cooling on the cab roof) this locomotive never made it abroad.  Instead, it was sent to Scotland where it was used in connection with the shale gas industry.  Due to its dangerous surroundings the locomotive was fitted with flame proof exhaust systems and enclosures.  

Fitted with a 5cyl National diesel engine and a 3 speed SCC gearbox and mechanical clutch.

Sentinel vertical bolier Musketeer 

Sentinel 100HP ‘4w VBT Type’ Vertical-boiler industrial steam engine built in 1946 by the Sentinel Waggon Works to work the Royal Ordnance Factory in Hooton, Wirral. It was purchased in 1958 by Thomas E. Gray Ltd. to shunt lime trucks from the Isham Quarries in Northamptonshire. Gray named the blue-liveried locomotive "Musketeer" to commemorate the Royal Navy ship that he served aboard during the Second World War. Withdrawn 1961 for boiler works. Rebuilt with boiler from English Electric Ltds WKS number 9533 from Bootle (Peeping Tom 2). Sold to NIRT 5th Sept 1975.

Sentinel vertical bolier Belvedere

Sentinel 100HP ‘4w VBT Type’ locomotive was built in 1945 for William Cory & Son a coal merchant at Erith where it was given the name Belverdere. Later moved to Thomas E Grey and Co ltd Isham quarry.  When the locomotive was no longer required for the business in 1967 it was donated to the council for use by the local community. Sold to NIRT 5th Sept 1975.

Leeds Fowler 4200022

John Fowler 0-4-0 diesel mechanical centre-cab locomotive design was built from the early 1930’s up to 1949 and was particularly popular with the military with Fowler’s supplying 120 during the 2nd World War. This class were built in the 137-150hp range and many were fitted with Fowler-Sanders engines. This example is of the 150hp.  New in March 1948 it was supplied to Vauxhall Motors in Luton.  In December 1972 it was sold to GEO Cohen Sons Northants, where it was used in the scrap yard.  In February 1977 it escaped the scrap yard to be used at Weldit Engineering Ltd, Barrow in furness. In July 1980 it was sold to the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and in 1989 moved to the Derwent Valley railway, before arriving to NIRT in 2020.

Hunslet

Hunslet no.16

Hunslet 0-4-0, built in 1940. 40hp Fowler Saunders 4 cylinder diesel engine, 2 speed mechanical gearbox, weighs 10 tons.

ex Anglian Building Products Ltd, Lenwade, Norfolk. 10/07/74. Stored at Blackwood Hodge Co ltd Northampton (Outside the former Hunsbury Hill railway Loco shed) July 10th 1974 until Aug 1976. Currently in early stages of restoration. Was called 'Humphrey the Hunslet' in 1990.
